Defenseman Zbynek Michalek Signs Five-Year Deal With Pittsburgh Penguins

The Pittsburgh Penguins signed former Phoenix Coyotes defenseman Zbynek Michalek to a five-year deal less than an hour after losing Sergei Gonchar to the Ottawa Senators soon after free agency began.

Michalek is a 6’2" 27-year-old from the Czech Republic who has been touted as one of the most underrated defensive players on the market. In fact Phoenix kept him in negotiations right up until the noon deadline.

Michalek scored only 17 points last season, but was a plus-five with 156 blocked shots and 80 points.

He is the first free agent the Penguins have signed today and should fit in nicely with the young but experienced team that needs to sign more defensemen for the 2010-2011 season.
