The Toronto Maple Leafs announced they traded center Daniel Winnik to the Washington Capitals on Sunday.
Toronto also sent the Anaheim Ducks' fifth-round pick in the 2016 NHL draft to Washington in exchange for the Capitals' second-round selection, defenseman Connor Carrick and forward Brooks Laich.
The Capitals acquired a player who had four goals and 10 assists in 56 games for the Maple Leafs as well as a minus-three rating. Washington general manager Brian MacLellan gave his thoughts on Winnik, per Mark Masters of TSN:
Toronto has traded the 30-year-old twice in a little more than a year, acquiring two second-round picks and a fourth-round selection in the deals.
Isabelle Khurshudyan of the Washington Post seems to think the Capitals, who have an NHL-leading 94 points, strengthened their roster:
This seems like a win-win deal. Washington added depth to a strong team, while Toronto continues to stockpile draft picks during what will be another non-playoff season.
