Following the conclusion of the 2010-2011 NHL season, Colorado Avalanche captain Adam Foote will retire from the game of hockey, the 39 year old defenseman announced Thursday.

Drafted 22nd overall by the Quebec Nordiques in the 1988 NHL Entry draft, Foote made his NHL debut in the 1991-92 NHL season playing 46 games. As the Quebec franchise moved to Denver, Foote quickly established himself as the Avalanche's top defenseman and one of the best shutdown defensemen in the NHL.

Playing 713 games over parts of 13 season with the franchise, Foote was a core player who helped lead the Avalanche to eight straight division titles and Stanley Cup championships in 1996 and 2001.

In 1153 games with the Nordiques, Avalanche, and Columbus Blue Jackets, Foote had 66 goals and 242 assists.
