Chicago Blackhawks Sign Defenseman Ryan Stanton to Entry Level Deal

According to the Daily Herald the Chicago Blackhawks have signed WHL defenseman Ryan Stanton to a three year entry level deal that will commence at the start of the 2010 season.

Stanton is currently playing in his fourth full season in the WHL with the Moose Jaw Warriors where he has accumulated 102 points and 335 penalty minutes, he also currently leads all Moose Jaw defensemen with 40 points.

The biggest strength that Stanton possesses is his physicality and his ability to use his size to his advantage as he likes to throw his body around. Stanton is also willing to drop the gloves to defend himself as he has fought five times this season with Moose Jaw.

With this signing the Blackhawks add another young defenseman to their minor league system with some of their higher tiered defensive prospects still a few years away from making the jump to the professional ranks.

Although Stanton is not overly flashy as a defenseman and likely won’t rack up tons of points he is a physical defenseman who will stand up for his teammates, something I believe the Blackhawks lack in their system.
