Ryan McDonagh scored the game-winning goal at the 9:57 mark of overtime on Friday night to lift the New York Rangers to an improbable 2-1 victory over the Washington Capitals at Madison Square Garden.

The Rangers win forces the series back to Washington for Game 6 Sunday night.

The Capitals lead the best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal 3-2.

Things looked bleak for the Blueshirts in the closing minutes of regulation.

Curtis Glencross scored his first career playoff goal on a rebound off a breakway with under 10 minutes remaining in the third period, and with Braden Holtby once again playing on another level, the equalizer seemed out of the Rangers grasp.

Chris Kreider breathed new life into the building by putting a drive past Holtby, on a shot the Capitals netminder probably should've stopped, with just 1:41 remaining in regulation and Henrik Lundqvist skating to the bench for the extra attacker.

Seizing on the momentum, the Rangers came out buzzing in overtime, generating traffic in front of Holtby and leading to McDonagh's game winner.

Holtby stopped 41 of the 43 shots he faced.
