Sidney Crosby drew three capitals to the side of Michael Neuvirth allowing Chris Kunitz to float in and pick up a rebound off of a weird wristed backhanded shot attempt by Crosby. Kunitz picked up the puck and backhanded it past Neuvirth just 17 seconds into the third period, giving Pittsburgh a 2-1 lead.
The Penguins' good fortune would continue as Mathieu Perrault would draw a questionable holding penalty. The call was so questionable that Caps goalie Michael Neuvirth started to the bench as he thought the penalty was going against Pittsburgh.
Play would go back and forth as Pittsburgh would get another man advantage chance when Nicholas Backstrom would get called for a high stick nine minutes and 21 seconds through the third. Washington would kill the man advantage causing Pittsburgh to be 0-4 in the game.
Perrault would draw his second penalty of the period giving the Penguins another power play with just 6:35 remaining in the game. This would be Washington’s third consecutive penalty in the period.
