Now that the Stanley Cup playoffs are here, it is a good time to recall the greatest names from the past that are true sports legends. Canada has been blessed with having the greatest player of a generation almost consistently from the 1940s to the present day. Canada was also blessed with many great support players who aren't on this list, including Jean Beliveau, Doug Harvey, Phil Esposito, Larry Robinson, Mark Messier, Bobby Clarke, Denis Potvin, Mike Bossy, Steve Yzerman and too many others to count. What follows is the cream of the crop, a list of every man who stood head and shoulders above everybody else, the best of all time. This list excludes goaltenders which should belong on their own list. No player from outside Canada has yet been good enough to reach this exalted position. Also to be noted is that none of these players entered the NHL at the same time so that this list reads almost like an unbroken chain from generation to generation though the careers overlap at times. But that means to date, there has never been a situation where two or more players have entered the NHL at the same time and were considered equals above everybody else.Begin Slideshow< ...
