On Feb. 25, the Detroit Red Wings signed 22-year-old defenseman Brian Lashoff to a three-year extension, which according to Ansar Khan at MLive.com is worth $2.175M. This deal was a brilliant move by the Red Wings' front office. It is a low-cost gamble that could pay huge dividends in the future.
Lashoff was called up to Detroit on Jan. 21 due to all the defensive injuries. He made himself invaluable by playing a smart defensive game and focusing on playing it safe from his own end. At one point, he was even paired with top Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall.
Lashoff scored in his first NHL game on Jan. 21 against the Columbus Blue Jackets. More importantly, Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock raved about Lashoff after that game (via Khan):
“Great game out of Lashoff. I thought he was incredible,'' coach Mike Babcock said. “Actually, I thought he was better here than in the American League, maybe because the game's more organized. But he made good decisions.
