Montreal Canadiens forward Brendan Gallagher broke two fingers Sunday in his team's 4-2 victory over the New York Islanders. Gallagher required surgery, and it is uncertain when he will return to the ice.

Gallagher's Injury Slows Productive Start to Season The injury is uncharacteristic for Gallagher considering he has played in 229 of the past 234 games for the Canadiens, per Chris Peters of CBSSports.com. He has been productive this season with nine goals and 10 assists for first-place Montreal.

Playing without the 23-year-old, who was on pace for a career-high 33 goals, will be new territory for the Canadiens, but they do have a nine-point cushion on the second-place Ottawa Senators.
