David Backes was the overtime hero as the St. Louis Blues bounced back to even their Stanley Cup Playoff series with the Dallas Stars at 1-1.
Backes gave the Blues a 4-3 win at the 10:58 mark of the extra frame after the Blues squandered a 3-1 lead during regulation time.
After giving up those three goals on just five shots in the first period, Dallas netminder Kari Lehtonen was replaced by Antti Niemi. The Stars fought back to tie the game on third-period goals from Mattias Janmark and Jamie Benn before Backes scored his second overtime game-winner of the playoffs, on his 32nd birthday.
In the end, special teams were the difference. Dallas went 0-for-4 with the man advantage, while St. Louis was 2-for-5, including the game-winning goal after Antoine Roussel was whistled for interfering with Jay Bouwmeester.
After opening the scoring in the series in Game 1, Roussel's three penalties on Sunday ultimately proved to be backbreakers for the Stars.
With the series all even, the action now shifts to St. Louis. Game 3 will be played Tuesday evening at Scottrade Center.
