Alex Ovechkin Hopes for a New Contract for Alexander Semin

There has been a decent amount of speculation that Alexander Semin’s career with the Washington Capitals may soon be coming to a close. Rumours have been swirling around for quite some time that the 26 year-old Russian will be traded. One person that may have a say in that matter, Alexander Ovechkin, does not want to see Semin moved.

Ovechkin recently spoke to Sports Express and had this to say about his Russian teammate, “We have a fantastic mutual understanding, and the coach knows that.”

Ovechkin was then asked if he was also trying to help Semin earn a new contract with the Capitals, “And that too, of course,” Ovechkin responded, “I would be very happy if Semin stays here. The fans really love him, and he himself is used to the team and the city. Well, it’s all in his hands, and the GM (George McPhee). Basically, we will just hope.”

Semin is playing under a one-year contract that expires at the end of this season. He is being paid $6 million and is currently on pace for a career best season of 59 goals and 104 points. He may be hard pressed to keep up his current scoring pace, but barring injury ...
