Aaron Ward an Interesting Option for Chicago Blackhawks

It has been reported by TSN's Bob McKenzie that the Carolina Hurricanes have placed veteran defenseman Aaron Ward on waivers. 

McKenzie also notes that it is unlikely that Ward will be picked up on waivers, considering he does have a cap hit of $2.5 million, and stands a better chance of getting picked up on re-entry waivers at half the cost.

One team who could have interest in the veteran defenseman is the Chicago Blackhawks. 

The Blackhawks already have a fairly solid defense that includes Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook, Brian Campbell, Niklas Hjalmarrson, Brent Sopel and Cam Barker.

With a lineup like that you might ask way the 'Hawks would need a player like Aaron Ward when their blue line is already fairly crowded.

The answer is that beyond these three pairs, the 'Hawks have zero depth on defense.

Currently the 'Hawks have Jordan Hendry penciled in as their seventh defenseman. But with his lack of NHL experience, it concerns many that if the 'Hawks were to lose a top-six defenseman their blue line might take a step back.
