With the 40th overall pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, the New York Rangers picked Christian Thomas of the Oshawa Generals in the CHL.
The 18-year old right wing is the son of former 400 goal scorer Steve Thomas, and the Rangers hope goals are in his jeans.
In his first season with the Generals, he scored 41 goals and had 66 points in 64, something that grabbed the attention of Glen Sather and company.
The only two players in the first-round to tally more goals than Thomas last season were second overall pick Tyler Seguin, and seventh overall pick Jeff Skinner. That should make Ranger fans very happy.
Although he is still a few years away, the Rangers should feel OK about the drafting of Thomas, being that there are few pure goal scorers on the current roster (no one comes to mind not named Gaborik) or in the system, aside from Corey Locke and Evgeny Grochev.
Many were surprised Glen Sather and company didn't draft a center who can make things happen offensively in the first round, so the Thomas pick hopefully makes up for it.
