In a time when David Stern reports the league is losing hundreds of millions of dollars, bargains are at a premium in the NBA. However, with the system that is in place with guaranteed contracts, the best players still make huge money, and it seems nearly impossible to find a bargain in free agency. For teams looking to improve on the cheap, the draft seems to be the only recourse. Because of the rookie scale contracts, NBA teams find the best bargains for their players in the first four years in the league because their values are controlled. Once they escape this rookie scale; however, the players don't hesitate to find their big payday. In fact, three of the five players in this slideshow are currently awaiting $50+ million contract extensions to kick in as they are free to negotiate contracts not restricted by their draft position.
