Retaining Tristan Thompson always seemed likely to be a major priority for the Cleveland Cavaliers this summer, and now, the breakout forward is set to become a restricted free agent.

Cavaliers Extend Qualifying Offer to Thompson Tuesday, June 30 Not surprisingly, the Cavs extended a qualifying offer to Thompson—along with Matthew Dellavedova and Iman Shumpert—meaning that they can match any offer sheet the power forward chooses to sign this offseason, per the team's official website.

It's possible, of course, that Thompson will not sign an offer sheet, instead agreeing to an extension with the team. One of the reasons that LeBron James opted out of his deal, per Marc Berman of the New York Post, was to "keep the Cavaliers honest and ensure they give his teammate, rugged power forward Tristan Thompson, a maximum contract. They share the same agent in Rich Paul."

Having James in your corner is never a bad thing.
