The Memphis Grizzlies signed guard Toney Douglas Monday "pursuant to the NBA’s hardship rule," according to NBA.com.
Douglas, 30, appeared in 61 games for the New Orleans Pelicans last season, averaging 8.7 points and 2.6 assists per contest.
Douglas has been a journeyman throughout much of his career, which has included stops with the New York Knicks, Houston Rockets, Sacramento Kings, Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat and the Pelicans. He was also on the Cleveland Cavaliers' postseason roster last year, though he didn't appear in any games.
Douglas' signing makes sense for Memphis, as the team's starting point guard, Mike Conley, is out for at least six weeks with fractured vertebrae. While Douglas won't replace Conley's 19.2 points and 5.7 assists per game, he'll give the Grizzlies added depth at guard until Conley returns.
Andrew Harrison has been the starter at point guard while Conley has been injured, with Wade Baldwin IV seeing significant minutes as well. Therefore, Douglas will enter a crowded position with minutes up for grabs in Memphis.
