Tim Duncan: Latest Contract News, Rumors and Speculation on Spurs Star’s Future

Tim Duncan is an unrestricted free agent this offseason, but it would be a massive shock if he signs with anybody other than the San Antonio Spurs. The biggest surprise may be the relatively small sum Duncan receives in order to stay in San Antonio.

Spurs Aim to Save Cap Space with Duncan Extension Saturday, June 20 Over the past few years, Duncan has signed extensions with the Spurs that were below market value. Per Basketball-Reference.com, his salary dropped from $21.2 million in 2011-12 to $9.6 million in 2012-13 and then rose to $10.4 million in the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons.

According to Mike Monroe of the San Antonio Express-News, the 39-year-old may continue to help the team save money with his next deal:

There are several NBA player personnel executives who believe the Spurs will offer Duncan a two-year contract that begins between $6 million and $7 million, with a partial guarantee and a player option in the second season.

If Duncan doesn't exercise the option, he gets, say, 50 percent of that season's salary. In effect, his salary for next season would remain over $10 mill ...
