Kobe Bryant has been one of the most polarizing players in the NBA. Regardless of how you feel about the Black Mamba, you have to respect him.

After all, there's no one whose jump shot comes close to mimicking that of one of the greatest basketball players of all time in Michael Jordan. Not only did both players feature similar jumpers, but it was their drive that made them even more alike in style.

Like many of us, Bryant idolized Jordan. So much so that he nearly ditched L.A. to join with the Washington Wizards when Jordan returned to the NBA—perhaps if only to know what it takes to win on his own terms. Bryant wanted what Jordan had and more.

For the fans, it was unfortunate that Jordan retired for good at the conclusion of the 2002-03 season. Everyone wanted to see Jordan compete against Bryant as the latter continued to develop his game. Twelve years ago today, we witnessed the matchup of the mentor and the prodigy.
