One of the first things you have to understand about Canadian sports fans is that the teams they support are always fighting an uphill battle with teams from the U.S.
Trust me, you will never convince a Canadian that the United States isn't working with a stacked deck.
This holds true for a variety of reasons.
1. The Canadian dollar used to be absolutely worthless and made it hard for Canadian teams to sign free agents and resign players.
2. Canadians are still sour about losing The Nordiques and Jets to cities that really don't care about hockey. It's kind of like losing your girlfriend to a dude who has her as a side chick.
3. What NBA player has ever willingly stayed in Toronto/Vancouver?
So it is a time honoured tradition to fall in love with a player only to have them traded or let go for monetary reasons; most citizens have learned to deal with this through various methods.
Either by booing them lustily whenever they return (ex: Vince Carter, Toronto) or welcome them back warmly (ex: Ryan Smyth, Edmonton).
