Omer Asik Injury: Updates on Pelicans Center’s Calf and Return

New Orleans Pelicans center Omer Asik suffered a calf strain that will keep him out of action for a couple of weeks.

Asik to Miss 3 Weeks with Strain  Thursday, Oct. 8 The Pelicans confirmed the injury, noting Asik picked up the ailment during Wednesday's practice, according to NBA.com.

With New Orleans set to open the regular season on Oct. 27 against the Golden State Warriors, followed by games on Oct. 28 (Portland Trail Blazers) and Oct. 31 (Warriors again), it is possible that he could miss a few contests early in the campaign.

Asik is often overshadowed by Anthony Davis in the New Orleans frontcourt, but losing his presence with the regular season on the horizon could be a huge setback for the Pels as they look to return to the playoffs.

It is an especially significant injury since New Orleans is already hurting in terms of depth at the center position, per ESPN's Marc Stein:
