NBA Lockout: We Are Watching David Stern’s Last Stand

If ever there was a polarizing figure in sports right now, it's David Stern.  Once thought of as one of the greatest commissioners in the history of organized sports in America, David Stern in all his bull-headed, arrogant, yet media-friendly glory is now watching his reputation take a hit to the point where people are mentioning him in the same breath as...Bud Selig.

That will happen when the league you preside over is going to end up missing games due to a lockout for the second time in 14 seasons.

Let's get the obvious out of the way first.

There are too many players in the NBA making huge salaries as a result of overachieving followed by quickly declining play or injuries (we'll call this the Rashard Lewis Effect). There are too many teams in the league, and the owners have too many ways to screw up their teams at their disposal (they legitimately need to be protected from themselves).



All of these problems have stemmed from the good things that Stern has done for the league and his image up to this point.  He expanded the league by seven teams since he took over in 1984, and that's something he's very proud of. ...
