Ricky Rubio poured in a career-high 28 points, Lou Williams missed a potential game-winning shot as time expired and the Minnesota Timberwolves opened the season with a victory over the Los Angeles Lakers Wednesday night at the Staples Center.

Minnesota (1-0) used a 24-16 advantage in the fourth quarter to finish off a 15-point second-half comeback. Rubio also dished 14 assists, while Kevin Martin netted 23 points and Karl-Anthony Towns registered a double-double in his NBA debut.

Though the Timberwolves only connected on 5-of-20 three-pointers, they forced 14 turnovers and held Los Angeles (0-1) to a 38 percent mark from the field.

Bryant paced the Lakers with 24 points but missed his final eight shots. Julius Randle was the most impressive Los Angeles player, providing a physical presence in the post throughout the night. He finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Williams tallied 21 points, while rookie D'Angelo Russell logged 26 minutes, recording four points, three rebounds and two assists.
