Julian Washburn to Spurs: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction

The San Antonio Spurs have signed former UTEP forward Julian Washburn, according to ESPN’s Michael C. Wright.

Washburn, who averaged double figures all four seasons with the Miners, finished his career averaging 11.7 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game.   

However, it was his stellar defense against opponents' best players that Washburn was known for in college, according to UTEP’s official athletics site. He earned Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year honors his senior season and was named to the conference All-Defensive team three times.

The move, which comes the same day the Spurs announced they cut four players—including former BYU standout Jimmer Fredette—puts San Antonio at 17 players, two over the max roster limit, per Nick Moyle of MySanAntonio.com.

That means, according to Moyle, Washburn may not be on the roster very long and could be headed to Austin, Texas, to play with San Antonio’s D-League affiliate, the Austin Spurs.
