With the NBA salary cap rising this offseason, Cleveland Cavaliers shooting guard J.R. Smith will likely be among the many players looking to cash in on free agency with a lucrative long-term deal.

Smith Unlikely to Exercise Player Option Wednesday, June 15 Cleveland.com's Chris Haynes reported Wednesday that Smith, who has a player option for 2016-17, plans on becoming an unrestricted free agent.

Smith has little reason to opt into his current contract. According to Spotrac, he's set to earn a little under $5.4 million next season. He could command double that or more on the open market.

The 30-year-old will be among the more interesting players to watch over the summer. His stock has risen since his trade to the Cavs. In 123 regular-season games with the team, he averaged 12.5 points a game on 41.9 percent shooting. He also hit 39.6 percent of his three-pointers—his highest figure during his tenure with any one team.
