Elfrid Payton Injury: Updates on Magic Point Guard’s Ankle and Return

Orlando Magic point guard Elfrid Payton is dealing with an ankle injury that will keep him out of the lineup. It is uncertain when he will return to action.

Payton Out vs. Pistons Monday, Jan. 4 John Denton of OrlandoMagic.com passed along word of Payton's ankle sprain and bruise, which will keep him out for the first time in his NBA career.

Payton told reporters it's the first game he'll have missed since he was "seven or eight" when he was diagnosed with chicken pox.

Payton Emerging as Vital Cog for Magic A first-round pick in 2014, Payton is slowly evolving into a key piece of Orlando's young, dynamic rotation. He's increased his scoring output and has been shooting better from three-point range. 

The Magic's depth at point guard is not an area of strength, with Shabazz Napier and C.J. Watson listed as the backups on the depth chart. 

However, Orlando does have 2-guards who are capable of handling the ball. Evan Fournier is second on the team in scoring, and Victor Oladipo is better served by trying to facilitate on offense while playing lockdown defense.
