Nowitzki To Be Priority for Mavs Should He Become a Free AgentMonday, May 2The Fort Worth Star-Telegram's Dwain Price reported Monday that Nowitzki will likely become a free agent this summer. Price then floated the possibility of Nowitzki signing a two-year deal with the Mavs, with the option to become a free agent after the first year of the deal.
General manager and team president Donnie Nelson indicated Dallas wouldn't hesitate to sit down at the negotiating table and work out a new contract with the franchise's all-time leading scorer.
"There is not a player that I've been around that has his kind of winning software," Nelson said, per Price. "He's our Roger [Staubach], our Troy [Aikman], our Mike Modano, Nolan Ryan. That's who he is, so he deserves the courtesy of the first sit-down."
