Pau Gasol, he of the much-maligned defense, delivered a clutch block on the last shot attempt of a game that his Chicago Bulls won, 97-95, over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

With less than five seconds to play, LeBron James drove the lane and elevated to the rim, but was met at his apex by the outstretched hand of Gasol. Cleveland would turn the ball over on the subsequent inbound pass.

Gasol finished the game with just two points on 1-of-7 shooting, but his big play sealed the opening-night victory for the Bulls.

Chicago was led by Nikola Mirotic, who started over Joakim Noah and scored 19 points on 6-of-11 shooting. He also grabbed nine boards. Most importantly, he vindicated his start by showing how much more space the Bulls offense can create when he's on the floor.

Derrick Rose scored 18 points, but took 22 shots to get there. Jimmy Butler added 17, including two crucial buckets in the fourth quarter.

The Cavs, meanwhile, were led by LeBron James, who scored 25 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out five assists. There may be some lingering issues with his back, though, as he spent a good chunk of the game laying on he ...
