Chuck Hayes’ Contract with Rockets Falls Through: Latest Details and Reaction

Chuck Hayes will not be signing with the Houston Rockets after all, as his agent told Marc J. Spears of Yahoo Sports on Thursday:

Hayes, 32, played 29 games for the Toronto Raptors last season, averaging 1.7 points and 1.8 rebounds in 8.8 minutes per game. A career role player, Hayes had his most productive season with Houston in 2010-11, averaging 7.9 points and 8.1 rebounds in 28.1 minutes per game.

Hayes spent the first six seasons of his career with Houston before stints with the Sacramento Kings and the Raptors.

It appeared he had a deal in place with Houston in late July for a one-year, partially guaranteed veterans-minimum contract, as Calvin Watkins of ESPN.com reported at the time. But with Dwight Howard, Terrence Jones, Clint Capela and Montrezl Harrell all likely to be ahead of him on the depth chart down low, it's unlikely Hayes would have made much of an impact with Houston.

The one upside for Hayes is that it appears he has a future coaching in the league, though if he ultimately wants to play this season, he'll be doing so in a different city than Houston.
