LeBron James was still the King as a rookie in 2003, but he had yet to truly earn his crown at the NBA level.

An apparent early version of what became LBJ’s first signature shoe—the Nike Air Zoom Generation—has surfaced. Were they fit for royalty?

That’s up for debate. But these could eventually make for a sweet retro pair.

On Thursday, Brandon Richard of Sole Collector wrote that the kicks pictured above are “an early version that didn't release."

Eventually, Nike polished up the design and produced an appropriately sharp look:

James has since evolved into one of basketball’s all-time greats—both on the court and in the shoe game.
