Any suspense about who the Philadelphia 76ers were going to take with the No. 1 pick in Thursday's NBA draft has apparently ended with the reports that Ben Simmons has been informed his name will be called, per Chris Haynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
ESPN's Brian Windhorst confirmed that the 76ers have told Simmons he will be selected first overall.
Haynes and Windhorst's reports will likely not come as a surprise to most fans, as there's really been no doubt Simmons would be taken first overall for the last year.
While Simmons hasn't been universally regarded as the top draft prospect by analysts, he is overwhelmingly regarded as the best talent in the 2016 class.
In his latest big board, which had Simmons at No. 1 ahead of Duke's Brandon Ingram, ESPN's Chad Ford noted the former LSU star has used his prep time to work on various elements of his game:
