The Pittsburgh Penguins took a 2-1 lead in their second-round Stanley Cup playoff series against the Washington Capitals after hanging on for a 3-2 win in Game 3 on Monday at Consol Energy Center.
The Penguins were outplayed throughout the contest, but rookie goaltender Matt Murray gave his team a chance to win, stopping 47 of Washington's 49 shots.
Though it was outshot 14-8 in the opening period, Pittsburgh grabbed a 2-0 lead on goals by Patric Hornqvist and Tom Kuhnhackl. The Pens extended their advantage to 3-0 on Carl Hagelin's goal in the second.
The Caps finally solved Murray in the third, when Alexander Ovechkin and Justin Williams scored for the first time in the series.
That set up a frantic finish, with Braden Holtby pulled for an extra attacker and Pittsburgh on its heels. Thanks to Murray, the Penguins held on in front of a euphoric home crowd.
Game 4 is set for Wednesday in Pittsburgh.
