One goal was all that was needed for the St. Louis Blues to take a 1-0 series lead over the defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks in their first-round NHL playoff series on Wednesday night.

Captain David Backes scored the game-winner off a deflection at 9:04 of the first overtime period, giving the Blues a 1-0 win over their archrivals.

The game was a tight one, featuring excellent goaltending at both ends from Brian Elliott and Corey Crawford. The Blackhawks outshot the Blues 35-18 despite dressing three rookie defensemen.

St. Louis attacked the defending champions with a physical game, outhitting Chicago by a margin of 41-24.

For the Blues, the Game 1 win is a breath of fresh air as the team strives to get out of the first round for the first time in four years. The Blackhawks can take solace in the fact that they fell behind the Blues 0-2 in 2014 before coming back to win the series—and that suspended defenseman Duncan Keith will be back in the lineup next game.

Game 2 of Blackhawks-Blues goes Friday in St. Louis.
