The New York Rangers (41-24-8) will not be able to catch the Washington Capitals (52-15-5) for the Metropolitan Division title with only nine games left until the postseason.
However, the Rangers are still fighting for home ice in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, and so are the Boston Bruins (39-26-8) when they meet Wednesday at Madison Square Garden.
New York is a consensus minus-140 favorite (bet $140 to win $100) at sportsbooks monitored by Odds Shark and has split two meetings with Boston this season, with each of them winning as a home favorite by one goal.
The Bruins are third in the Atlantic Division, three points behind the Florida Panthers. They will be playing the finale of a four-game road trip in New York and lost the first three on the West Coast by a combined score of 9-3.
Prior to the trip, Boston had seen four of its previous five games go to overtime, splitting them 2-2. The Bruins will play again Thursday versus the Panthers at home in another important matchup.
