Although the New York Rangers are currently in the middle of one of their worst seasons in recent memory, Ryan McDonagh is currently on pace for the best season of his young NHL .

It is mind boggling that the Rangers are struggling to remain consistent under Alain Vigneault, and it is even more interesting that one of the team's most important players is finding a way to be a factor amidst the Blueshirts' blunders.

McDonagh is a rising star in the NHL, but how exactly is he dazzling during the Rangers' dreadful campaign?

The short answer is that McDonagh has fully embraced the mantra of "clean slate, grab it" and he has made the most of the opportunities given to him. The 24-year-old rearguard was recently called the Blueshirts' best defender by Vigneault, according to Katie Strang of ESPN NY, and the numbers certainly back up that statement.

This year McDonagh has clearly carved out his role as the team's No. 1 defender, and he has been an anchor of a blue line marred with injuries and indecision.
