Chicago Blackhawks goalie Corey Crawford's shadow may not grace the crease until 2014. Nikolai Khabibulin may have played his last game in net in the NHL.
This is far from the scenario that general manager Stan Bowman could have forecast when he put the Chicago roster together this fall.
For the time being, however, rookie Antti Raanta is making it work. But how long Chicago's perilous goalie situation remains above water is anybody's guess.
The Blackhawks have ridden Raanta to consecutive wins following the loss of Crawford to a lower body injury last Sunday against Florida. The 'Hawks believe that Crawford will be out of action for the next three weeks, based on coach Joel Quenneville's comments to Todd Willis of ESPNChicago.com.
If that assessment proves to be accurate, we can expect Crawford to miss at least 10 games, including some key Western Conference tilts at the end of the month. How will the current tandem of Raanta and Kent Simpson fare in his absence?
