Doc Rivers’ Ability to Keep Chris Paul with Clippers Makes Trade Worthwhile

Doc Rivers was brought to the Los Angeles Clippers with the goal of eventually winning a championship. If he gets Chris Paul to re-sign with the club, however, he will have already done his job.

After two successful years with the team, the idea that Paul was going to stick around was far from a foregone conclusion. 



The first problem was the coach. He was clearly not getting along with Vinny Del Negro, and things only got worse after Del Negro was fired by the organization. Paul was blamed for the decision, which caused him to be upset at the team. 

Paul then pushed for Rivers to be the head coach and was once again disappointed when the Boston Celtics coach first turned down the opportunity. 

When the All-Star point guard started being pursued by the Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks, there were plenty of reasons for fans in Los Angeles to be concerned. 

Then everything changed when the Clippers finally completed the trade to acquire Rivers as the new head coach, sending only a 2015 first-round pick in return.
