RC Buford: General Manager’s DWI Ruins Spurs’ Squeaky Clean Image

The San Antonio Spurs' clean-cut, 1950's-style image took a major hit Friday night when GM R.C. Buford was arrested for driving while intoxicated. 

In a sport and league that is inherently edgy, the Spurs have been able to maintain a remarkably clean public image.

Throughout the last two decades, San Antonio has been the least frightening, most politically correct team in the NBA.

Gregg Popovich runs a notoriously tight ship, they are constantly signing "high character" guys, and their franchise cornerstone is the most boring superstar in the history of sports.

Other than the occasional story about Tony Parker sleeping with a teammate's wife, the Spurs have been controversy-free since the mid-90s.

But that squeaky clean image was ruined with Buford's arrest.

I'm not sure how the Spurs ownership feels about alcohol, but it's not like he just had a few beers on a Friday night. He was hammered.

How can San Antonio expect their players to behave when the man calling the shots is getting drunk and crashing into fences?
