Michal Neuvirth Leaves Bruins Game Early: Will Semyon Varlamov Capitalize?

Going into the Washington Capitals' sixth game of the season, Michal Neuvirth had started the five previous games, compiling a record of 4-1.

The 22-year-old goalie had the Caps tied for first place with the Tampa Bay Lightning in the NHL's Southeast Division.

Neuvirth took advantage of an untimely injury to his goaltending partner Semyon Varlamov and became the Caps' starting goalie by default. Neuvirth's numbers were respectable in his five starts, placing him in the top half of the league in both save percentage and goals against.

On Tuesday night he once again found himself the starting goalie for the Capitals as they faced the Boston Bruins. During the first period Neuvirth was forced to leave the game due to an illness that the team later said was the flu. 

Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau said, "He complained of dizziness and a headache, then he came off...first time I knew about it."

Neuvirth was replaced in net by Varlamov, who saw his first regular season game action after injuring his groin in the preseason. Varlamov stopped 13 of the 14 shots he saw in relief.
