Toronto Maple Leafs Sign Clarke MacArthur

So today the trade for Matt Lashoff makes much more sense. TSN has just reported that the Toronto Maple Leafs have signed Clarke MacArthur to a one-year contract worth $1.1 million.

Yesterday, Brian Burke opened up a roster spot by sending Stephano Giliati and Alex Berry to Tampa Bay, which paved the way for the MacArthur signing.

At age 25, MacArthur is a young left winger who in my opinion hasn't reached his full potential. He split last season with the Atlanta Thrashers and Buffalo Sabres, tallying 16 goals and 19 assists for a total of 35 points.

The Leafs are very weak at the left wing position so the signing of MacArthur provides some stability with a player who will fit comfortably on the second or third line. After missing out of Raffi Torres, Burke felt it necessary to add more offense via free agency.

With Grabovski likey to centre the third line with Armstrong and MacArthur on his wings, this provides a decent checking line which also has the potential to score 60 goals, collectively. Great signing by Brian Burke, in my opinion. Hopefully this move isn't the last one before October.
