The Flyers announced on Monday that tough guy Riley Cote has retired from the National Hockey League after four seasons to join the Adirondack Phantoms as an assistant coach.
Cote, 28, has only one goal and seven points to his name in 156 career games while playing in only 15 games during the 2009-10 season.
It was expected that Cote had played his last game with the Flyers, as many believed he was headed to Glen Falls as a player to free up his cap hit, but with the retirement, his contract comes off the books completely while he can migrate to the next stage in his hockey career.
His retirement frees up $550,000 in cap space; not a lot, but given Philadelphia’s tight cap situation, it’s a relief.
Cote was never an effective hockey player when his gloves weren’t on the ice, but he’s truly one of the good guys in the sport.
