Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Philadelphia Flyers: Flyers Bully Way to Conference Lead

The Pittsburgh Penguins brought a 12-game winning streak into the Wells Fargo Center Tuesday night against the Philadelphia Flyers, in a game that proved about as important as a pre-Christmas NHL tilt can hope to be.

The two clubs battled for supremacy in the Eastern Conference, with the Flyers one point behind the Penguins entering the contest. By the time the well-played, physical game was over, the Flyers had captured the lead in the Eastern Conference—and the points lead in the entire NHL—by holding on for a 3-2 victory in front of 19,824 fans.

Scott Hartnell scored the power-play game-winner on a deflection, Nikolay Zherdev and Claude Giroux notched tallies, and Chris Pronger notched two assists, including one on Hartnell’s game-winner.

Zherdev, a healthy scratch Saturday night against the Bruins, scored the Flyers’ second goal of the night in the second period. Corralling the puck at center ice, he moved down the left wing and deked out Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik, squaring up in front of the goal and ripping one high blocker side past a scrambling Marc-Andre Fleury.
