NHL Today: Kovalchuk, Zajac, Gagner, Thornton, Stempniak and More

Ilya Kovalchuk

The Kovalchuk circus continues. No news yet on whether or not the NHL has accepted the Devils' latest offer. However, the NHL is expected to accept the latest offer worth $100 million over 15 years. They wouldn't want to lose a superstar forward to the rival KHL.

Tabone's Input: I expect Kovalchuk to sign very soon. The NHL cannot afford to lose a superstar to a rival league. 

 

Travis Zajac

Mark Everson of the New York Post is reporting that the the Devils may possibly move center Travis Zajac to accommodate Kovalchuk's contract. Zajac's making $3.9M this year.

Tabone's Input: I highly doubt the young center gets moved. I believe Devils management would move veterans Bryce Salvador and Dainus Zubrus first. If they can't trade them, those two players could see time in the minors. 




Sam Gagner

Various sources are reporting that the Edmonton Oilers have re-signed RFA forward Sam Gagner to a two-year deal worth $4.55M ($2.275M per season).
