NHL Buzz: New Jersey Devils Close to Another Contract with Kovalchuk

Various reports have been suggesting that the New Jersey Devils and Ilya Kovalchuk are closing in on a contract. Two reports even suggest it will happen today. As a hockey fan you should be thrilled when this happens for a few reasons.

1. You don't have to hear about Kovalchuk anymore.

2. The Devils will have to make some trades which are always exciting.

3. They might have a player your favorite team will be interested.

If and when Ilya Kovalchuk signs in New Jersey, they will look to trade a player or two. I have seen Patrik Elias' name come up a fair bit recently but he has a NMC and I highly doubt he would waive it. Bryce Salvador, Colin White, Dainius Zubrus, and Brian Rolston seem like more likely trade options.

Dmitry Chesnokov of Yahoo! sports reports that Alex Semin is training non-stop in Russia and will be in the best shape of his life for the upcoming season.

According to the OC Register Joffrey Lupul is having some back problems and will not be ready for the season opener.

According to sportsnet.ca, Oilers defenseman Sheldon Souray still thinks he will be moved.
