New York Rangers Sign Prospect Kelsey Tessier to an Entry Level Contract

It is official. The New York Rangers have signed twenty-year-old center Kelsey Tessier to what is believed to be a one-year, entry level contract.

Tessier was drafted 110th overall by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, and spent last season playing for the Quebec Remparts and Moncton Wildcats of the QMJHL. He posted 19 goals, 34 assists, and 53 points combined for both teams. He also put up impressive playoff stats for Moncton, tallying 14 goals, 16 assists, and 30 points in twenty-one playoff games.

This signing is a good signing because Tessier has a bright future. He could've easily made the first or second round of the 2008 Entry Draft, but scouts believe his size was the main reason for the major decline on the draft board.

The 5'9" 169 pound center will likely spend the season in Hartford, which is the reason I am confused by this signing. The signing will go against the Rangers summer cap, and while it probably won't be much more than about $500,000, it is still money that could be used elsewhere.
