It’s midway through October now and the third week of the season is history. The Devils now stand at 2-6-1 and still remain last in the Atlantic Division.
Martin Brodeur got his first shutout of the season Thursday night in his hometown against the Montreal Canadiens. Marty stopped all 29 shots by the Canadiens giving the Devils their second win of the season. Zach Parise, Jason Arnott and Matt Taormina were the ones who scored for New Jersey.
New Jersey suffered a brutal loss to Buffalo on Saturday losing the contest 6-1. Kovalchuk was absent in this game and the Devils sure did miss him as well as the fans. Brodeur got pulled midway through the second period after he let in four goals; Johan Hedberg replaced him and let in another two goals through the third. Parise was the only Devil’s player to score that game getting his third goal of the year.
Kovalchuk was back for the Sunday game against the Rangers and without him the Devils would have been shutout for he scored the only goal of the night for the Devils. The Rangers scored three of their own to go onto victory in this Battle of the Hudson River. Brodeur picked up another loss for this game making his record now 2-5-1 with one shutout.
