Exploding for 7 Goals Not a Rare Occurence for Philadelphia Flyers

Philadelphia at least partly righted its listing ship with a 7-0 blowout of the New York Islanders on Monday afternoon in a Presidents Day matinee at Nassau Coliseum. It was the second time this season the Flyers had struck for seven goals in a single outing, following a 7-1 victory over the Florida Panthers on Jan. 26.

Team captain Claude Giroux scored twice against the Islanders, including the game-opening goal just 26 seconds after the first puck was dropped. Matt Read scored his team-best seventh goal just 15 seconds into the second period to put the Flyers up, 2-0, en route to a three-goal middle stanza for the visitors. Jakub Voracek assisted on each of the Flyers’ first four goals Monday, and leads the team with three goals and 12 assists for 15 points so far this season.

Philadelphia then tacked on three more goals in the third session, with Danny Briere scoring twice and getting the extra point after notching a second-period assist. Read also finished with two assists on the day to go along with his goal, his second score in three games. He had a hat trick in the Florida blowout last month.
