The rules, standards and practices of and around the National Hockey League perplex me sometimes. They are there for a reason, except when they're not, and other times they are sort of there but not really depending on the situation.

Chris Pronger is the embodiment of this idea.

How would you define Chris Pronger's status in the NHL right now? Active player? Retired player? Scout? Department of Player Safety employee? Handsome gentleman about town? 

Depending on your perspective, you can argue any of those positions, but the reality is this: Pronger will continue to receive regular direct deposits into his bank account from the Philadelphia Flyers and will do so through the end of the 2016-17 season, and that makes him, despite nearly four years of inactivity, an active player in the NHL.

In the face of this irrefutable fact, the Hockey Hall of Fame decided to rewrite its requirements for enshrinement, tweaking the language so Pronger would be eligible as soon as this year.
