The Washington Capitals have advanced to the second round of the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs after defeating the Philadelphia Flyers 1-0 on Sunday at Wells Fargo Center. The Capitals move on thanks to a 4-2 series win.

For the first time in the history of their franchise, the Capitals jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the series. Then, the Flyers climbed back in, winning two games thanks in large part to a valiant goaltending performance by Michal Neuvirth, who drew into the series to start Game 4.

After being shut out in Game 5 despite firing 44 shots on Neuvirth, the Caps came out on the positive side of the scoreboard on Sunday thanks to a near-perfect play. At 8:59 of the second period, Marcus Johansson and Alex Ovechkin set up Nicklas Backstrom for his second of the series—the only tally that Washington would need.

For the Flyers, the loss will sting, but the team and its fans should ultimately be pleased to have reached the postseason in the first year for new coach Dave Hakstol behind the Philadelphia bench.
