Center Patrice Bergeron was a driving force behind the Boston Bruins' run to the Stanley Cup Final this past season, and the organization is banking on his high level of play to continue for many years to come, as he signed a lucrative, long-term extension on Friday.

According to the Bruins' official website, Bergeron inked an eight-year, $52 million contract extension that will result in a $6.5 million cap hit per season. Bergeron was set to become a free agent after the 2013-14 season, but Bruins management ensured that it wouldn't become an issue.



Bergeron's current contract carries a $5 million cap hit, so he received a significant raise and was rewarded for his excellent play. The forward, who turns 28 on July 24, already has nine NHL seasons under his belt, and he has been a big-time contributor for the Bruins ...
