An old friend of the Portland Pirates' put a refreshing new twist on a recent trend for the Providence Bruins in the closing half of a home-and-home series Friday night.

P-Bruins captain Trent Whitfield, who played 348 games for Portland between 1998 and 2005, returned to his old haunt at the Cumberland County Civic Center on Wednesday. His return to the active Providence lineup after a two-month injury-induced absence was marred by his new team spilling another one-goal decision.

It was the P-Bruins’ third loss in a span of five games, each of those failings seeing them spill an initial lead and allow the clinching goal within the final five minutes of regulation. The other two were against Worcester on Dec. 21 and Dec. 29.

When the venues made a switch on Friday, Whitfield saw to it that the roles did, too. With 4:19 left in regulation, and more than two periods after his penalty-killing unit had yielded a 2-1 deficit, the captain finalized a 3-2 victory before a delighted Dunkin Donuts Center congregation of 8,932.
